Trouble Puppet Theater Company Presents: The Jungle

Trouble Puppet Theater Company Presents: The Jungle

Last weekend What Makes Austin took a quick jaunt over to the Salvage Vanguard Theater to catch a performance based on Upton Sinclair’s hugely influential novel, The Jungle. For those who haven’t read the book since high school, The Jungle is based on Sinclair’s undercover experience at a Chicago meat packing plant in the early 1900s. His depiction of the hopeless and maltreatment of workers by managers and owners, along with stomach turning revelations about unsanitary conditions, were pivitol marks for the Union movement and food safety standards.

This isn’t you’re typical puppet show. Winning a grant from the Jim Henson Foundation, the performers and puppets work in tandem to bring this serious and dark material to life.

Connor Hopkins, the Trouble Puppet Theater’s founder describes why The Jungle was good source material in an interview at the Austin Chronicle:

The Jungle fits puppetry as a medium because it’s a story about people who are at the mercy of forces beyond their understanding. It’s also our first show where the puppeteers are visible, instead of dressed in black with hoods over their faces: They’re dressed as workers in the slaughterhouse, just doing their job, and the puppetry is part of that job. Because you want to see these workers acted upon; you want to see that the world they’re in is so much bigger than they are and has more parts to it. It enables the audience to instantly extrapolate from this little puppet to this human being to this group of human beings. It sets that up from the beginning, when you see workers walking around with puppets, pulling a puppet out of a metal bucket, making it perform a scene, and then tossing it aside like it was a piece of meat.

This performance is truly one-of-a-kind, particularly relevant to today’s political landscape, and absolutely worth checking out.
